Landscaping in Raleigh, NC

In Raleigh, the “best” grass depends on sun and how much upkeep we want: tall fescue is popular for a lush look (but may need overseeding), Bermuda thrives in full sun and handles heat well, and zoysia is a great “nice lawn with less mowing” option once established. We’ll pick based on our yard’s sun, irrigation, and how perfect we want it to look.

For full sun + NC heat, Bermuda is usually the top performer, followed by zoysia. Bermuda grows aggressively and recovers fast; zoysia looks premium and can be lower-maintenance once it fills in.

It depends on the grass type. Warm-season grasses (Bermuda/zoysia) do best when planted late spring through summer, while tall fescue is best seeded in early fall so roots establish before winter. If we’re outside the ideal window, we can still improve the yard with soil prep, grading, weed control, and a plan for the next best planting time.

To thicken a thin lawn, we focus on the basics: mow at the right height, fertilize appropriately, improve soil (aeration/topdressing if needed), fix drainage/compaction, and fill bare spots with seed/sod depending on the grass type. Most thinning in Raleigh comes from shade, compacted clay soil, poor drainage, or mowing too low—once we fix the cause, the lawn fills in faster.

Almost always higher. Mowing a bit taller helps grass shade the soil, hold moisture, and crowd out weeds, especially during Raleigh heat. Cutting too low (“scalping”) stresses the lawn and creates thin, patchy areas.

St. Augustine typically looks best when we mow about once per week during strong growth (sometimes more in peak summer), keeping it at a consistent height and never removing more than about 1/3 of the blade at a time. Consistency matters more than chasing a perfect number.

Zoysia is usually better for Raleigh yards that get plenty of sun and want a dense, “finished” look with less frequent mowing once established. St. Augustine can do well with some shade and has a broad blade, but it’s more common closer to coastal conditions and can be pickier about winter/maintenance depending on the site. We choose based on sun, soil, and how we want the lawn to look and perform.

A few of the most common invasive plants we see around NC landscapes include English ivy, kudzu, Japanese honeysuckle, and privet—they spread fast and can choke out desired plants. The best approach is to identify it early, remove it completely (roots included), and replant or mulch the area so it doesn’t come right back.
